Belarus wants to retrieve journalist Inna Kardash, accused of espionage for the KGB in Ukraine

Minsk has expressed interest in exchanging Belarusian journalist Inna Kardash, detained in Ukraine in early 2026. This was reported by Bohdan Ohrymenko, a representative of the Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, noting that a signal was received from the Belarusian side, but it has not yet transitioned into concrete proposals.

Ohrymenko reported that Ukraine received a corresponding signal from the Belarusian side.

— Such a signal was received, but, apart from conversations, there is nothing concrete yet. We are open to proposals. We are not interested in keeping foreign criminals and spending budget funds on them, at a time when our illegally convicted citizens are behind bars in inhumane conditions. If the communication results in practical proposals, we will consider them, — he said.

He added that there are people in Belarus whom Ukraine wants to get back.

— We know and remember each of them. Negotiations are underway. Communication with the Belarusian side has always existed, — he says.

He also shared some details about how Ukrainian special services handled Kardash.

— The SBU and HUR received information about her activities and began an operational game. She thought she was working at the Coordination Headquarters. A pseudo-workplace was organized for her; she did not have access to the premises of the Coordination Headquarters, she was in a different location. The premises themselves were prepared to record everything that happened there, and the materials given to her contained no truthful information. When SBU officers involved in her escort recorded everything, her detention was organized, and she is now under investigation.

Inna Kardash was detained on January 20 on suspicion of espionage for the Belarusian KGB.
