A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache military helicopter was on a routine patrol of regional waters on June 8 when it was shot down by Iranians and crashed into the sea. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins reported that the response was exceptionally swift.

Within two hours, both crew members were found and taken to safety. The servicemen are in stable condition.

Rescuers' Secret Weapon: Task Force 59 Drone Unit

In addition to Air Force aviation and traditional U.S. Navy forces, the 5th Fleet, specifically its special unit Task Force 59, participated in the mission. This is the U.S. Navy's main experimental group in the Middle East, testing the latest unmanned maritime technologies.

It was their drone boat (the exact model of which is still kept secret) that first found the pilots in the water and performed the role of an evacuation vessel. Military analysts have already called this success a major victory for the innovative unit.

Why This Changes the Rules of Warfare

The use of drones for human rescue opens up an entirely new era in maritime search and rescue operations. Experts highlight several reasons why this event is important for the future.

No risk to other personnel. To extract downed pilots from a combat zone, there is no longer a need to send a helicopter with a new crew and risk the lives of other rescuers.

Forward Basing. Drone boats can remain on duty for extended periods, undetected, at various points in the ocean along military aviation flight paths.

Access to restricted areas. Drones are capable of penetrating areas with high-density enemy air defenses and defenses, where conventional vessels or helicopters cannot go.

U.S. military officials state that traditional rescue methods are becoming too vulnerable to modern weapons, especially in the event of a potential conflict with an equally strong adversary. Drone boats are seen as one of the main methods of solving this problem.
