On January 15, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with Maria Kalesnikava. He received her at his official residence in Bellevue Palace, writes DW.

"It's wonderful to see you free again," Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Maria Kalesnikava in front of journalists.

Kalesnikava left an entry in the guestbook, where Nobel laureate in literature Sviatlana Alexievich had previously left a similar entry.
On December 13, 2025, Maria Kalesnikava was released after negotiations with the United States, along with 122 other political prisoners. Belarusian authorities took them to Ukraine, after which they were able to travel to EU countries. Maria Kalesnikava and Viktar Babaryka were officially received by Germany.
