In Africa, elephants trampled an American millionaire who came to hunt antelopes

In the West African country of Gabon, 75-year-old American millionaire Ernie Dossi died during a hunt, reports The Guardian.

The man came to Africa to hunt antelopes, but in the tropical forest, he and his guide unexpectedly encountered a group of elephants — five adult individuals and a calf. The animals likely got scared of the people and felt threatened by them, and so attacked them. As a result, the millionaire was simply trampled, and his guide sustained severe injuries.

Ernie Dossi was the owner of a winemaking company and owned large vineyards in the USA. He was also known as a trophy hunting enthusiast and over many years collected a significant collection of trophies, including from Africa.

According to acquaintances, he had been hunting all his life, and all his trips were officially permitted and licensed. Nevertheless, trophy hunting remains a controversial topic, as tens of thousands of animals die worldwide each year during such tours.

A large part of the forest elephant population lives in Gabon — a species that is endangered.
