Slalom channel near Minsk will operate all summer

The slalom channel near Minsk, which was used only episodically for a long time, is now filled with water and will operate for at least the entire summer. This was reported by "Minskvodokanal". At the same time, the water level in the channel may change depending on the needs of enterprises, as it is not only a sports but also a technical facility, writes Times.by.

This channel is part of the Vileika-Minsk water system. It was built in 1981 for canoeing slalom competitions. At that time, such facilities were a rarity: there was only one analogue in Europe — in Munich, where the Olympic Games were held in 1972.

In Soviet times, the channel was regularly used for competitions, but after 1991, the permanent water supply was stopped, and it only operated from time to time.

Now the launch of the channel has a technical reason, but it has also become a popular place for recreation. Since mid-May, people have been coming here en masse: some to take photos, others to try rafting on paddleboards, kayaks, or small boats. Some visitors note that the current is quite strong and gives feelings similar to real extreme sports.

At the same time, experts warn that the channel remains an industrial facility, not an official swimming or sports zone. There are no fines for rafting here, but there are risks: the speed and water level can suddenly change, and stone obstacles can lead to injuries. Therefore, people are urged to be careful and not underestimate the danger.
