Lithuanian Foreign Minister Met with Belarusian Representatives and Assured Them of Policy Consistency
On June 12, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys held a meeting in Vilnius with representatives of Belarusian democratic forces, civil society, diaspora, independent media, educational and business initiatives, as well as religious communities operating in Lithuania.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation of the Belarusian democratic community in Lithuania and the conditions for its further activities.
The Minister confirmed that Lithuania continues to support the Belarusian people and considers Vilnius a safe place where Belarusian organizations can freely operate, develop their projects, and support civic initiatives.
Special attention was paid to the practical problems faced by Belarusians in Lithuania. The participants of the meeting discussed issues related to obtaining Schengen visas, processing temporary residence permits, issuing other necessary documents, as well as the process of more successful integration of Belarusian citizens into Lithuanian society.
It was noted that Lithuania makes all decisions in this area while maintaining a balance between the desire to help Belarusians and the need to comply with the requirements of national legislation, European Union law, and measures to ensure state security.
Kęstutis Budrys emphasized that Lithuania and representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces share a common goal – to see Belarus as a democratic, independent, and free state. He stated that the current authoritarian regime in Belarus is viewed by the Lithuanian authorities as a threat to Lithuania's national security, as Belarus is a political and military ally of Russia, which pursues aggressive policies.
In this regard, the Minister expressed the opinion that at the European Union level, it is necessary to continue the policy of non-recognition of the current Belarusian authorities, support the international isolation of the regime, and maintain sanctions pressure. At the same time, according to him, it is necessary to continue supporting Belarusian democratic structures and ordinary citizens of Belarus.
Following the meeting, the participants agreed to continue cooperation and regular dialogue. The main directions of joint work should be the development of Belarusian civil society, support for educational projects, strengthening resilience to disinformation, and countering other common threats.
