36 Illegal Migrants Turned Back at Belarusian Border – a Record This Year
36 migrants who attempted to illegally cross the border from Belarus into Lithuania were turned back in the past day, reports LRT.
This is the largest number of migrants turned back at the border this year. Previously, the maximum was recorded on April 2, when 35 people from Belarus attempted to illegally enter Lithuania.
Latvian border guards turned back 56 illegal migrants on Saturday, while Polish services recorded no such cases on Friday.
In total, 386 illegal migrants have been denied entry to Lithuania since the beginning of the year. Last year, over 1,600 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus were recorded, and in the year before that, 1,002.
In total, since the beginning of the migration crisis provoked by Belarus, Lithuanian border guards have prevented almost 25,000 foreigners from illegally entering the country.
The influx of migrants into Eastern EU countries from Belarus began in 2021, with the West accusing the regime in Minsk of organizing it.
The cessation of the migrant flow is cited by Lithuanian authorities as one of the conditions for starting negotiations with the Belarusian regime.
