Cheap horror "Obsession" by American YouTuber becomes the main box office hit

At the center of the film's plot is the shy Bear, who has been in love with his friend Nikki for many years. They work together in a music store, hang out with friends, and live the ordinary lives of young people. However, Bear does not dare to confess his feelings, fearing to lose their friendship.

After a particularly difficult day (his cat died, and Nikki cornered him with the question: "Do you like me or something?"), the guy buys a "One Wish Wand" for $6.99 at an occult store. Breaking it, he wishes for Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world.

Unexpectedly, the magic comes true. At first, everything looks like a dream come true: the girl herself invites herself to stay overnight, then suggests lying in bed together, they kiss, and so on. At first, Bear is bewildered, then loses his mind with happiness. But soon he is gripped by real horror. As Dolin notes, the main message of the film lies in the classic formula: "Be careful what you wish for."

In the film critic's opinion, just a few decades ago, such a story could have become a romantic comedy or a fairy tale for adults. But in 2026, it naturally transformed into a horror film. Dolin emphasizes that the success of "Obsession" is due to the 26-year-old YouTuber from Alabama, Curry Barker, accurately capturing the "zeitgeist" — the spirit of the times. This is a film for those who fear not maniacs most of all, but Love itself.

The critic points out that for the characters of the story, the friendzone is simultaneously a comfort zone and the main trap. The transition from friendship to love requires a risk that frightens more than loneliness. The director explores the question: is it possible to maintain respect for another person's personal boundaries when feelings become total and uncontrollable?

As Dolin argues, this is where the main nerve of the film lies. Modern twenty- and thirty-year-olds are characterized by extreme sensitivity, delicacy, and a desire not to hurt each other. But when this becomes excessive, these qualities, which until recently seemed good, have turned into a source of weakness and vulnerability.

Barker depicts a generation for whom the fear of love (and with it, responsibility and adulthood) turns out to be stronger than the fear of pain, trauma, and even death itself.
