In the very heart of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, scientific staff have for the first time in the history of observations discovered a strange and mysterious parasitic mushroom of the genus Syzygospora, reported the scientific department of the national park.
Previously, representatives of this genus had not been recorded in the national park.
As specialists note, this mushroom infects forest mushrooms of the genus Gymnopus and literally embeds itself into its tissues at a cellular level. As a result, unusual wax-like growths, resembling a brain, begin to form on the host.
According to researchers, Syzygospora is a very rare and poorly studied parasite, so the find has so far only been identified down to the genus.
To determine exactly which species has been discovered in Belovezhskaya Pushcha – Syzygospora mycetophila or another, possibly unknown to science – scientists will need to conduct additional microscopic and genetic studies.
