Around 80 more political prisoners released in Venezuela. This was demanded by the USA

Venezuela's main human rights organization, Foro Penal, announced that at least 80 political prisoners were released from prisons across the country on Saturday under pressure from the United States, writes the BBC.

The head of the organization, Alfredo Romero, reported that his employees are confirming the identities of those released, after which they will announce their exact number. In a post on the X platform, Foro Penal lawyer Gonzalo Himiob stated that more than eighty might have been released.

Romero also published a photograph of one of the prisoners — Foro Penal employee Kennedy Tejeda, who, according to him, had been held in Tocorón prison west of Caracas since August 2024.

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, stated recently that since the US carried out an operation to capture former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, over 600 political prisoners incarcerated under his regime have been released.

However, Foro Penal claims that this figure is overstated. According to their data, from January 8 until today (not counting the latest wave), only 156 people have been released.

Among them are many representatives of the internal opposition, as well as at least five Spanish citizens.

At the same time, Foro Penal welcomes the efforts of the new authorities, who are carrying out not the first wave of releases in a short period. However, as the organization states, charges against many of those released have not been officially dropped. This leaves them in a legal vacuum and deprives them of the right to speak publicly, human rights activists say.

Delcy Rodríguez stated that on Monday, she plans to have a phone conversation with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk to ask the UN to verify the lists of those released to date.

Human rights organizations and activists have for many years accused the Venezuelan authorities of suppressing the opposition through arrests and imprisonment by court decision.

The Venezuelan government has always denied this, claiming that all those who ended up in prison were guilty of criminal offenses.

Many critics of Maduro were detained after the 2024 presidential elections, in which he declared his victory, although the opposition and many countries questioned the results.
