"Now there is a chance, I believe, as early as this summer to start negotiations," Johann Wadephul said in an interview with the RTL media group.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin may be more open to dialogue than before. "Perhaps he is now at a stage where he is seriously considering it," the German minister did not rule out.
In this context, Johann Wadephul mentioned a statement by Alexander Lukashenka, which he made in an interview with Al Arabiya English TV channel — "neither Russia nor Ukraine can win the war by military means."
"This is an interesting statement by a very close ally of Putin," he noted.
The head of the Foreign Ministry added that "Ukraine has been ready for negotiations all this time" and that now "Vladimir Putin must decide – whether he wants to negotiate or continue fighting."
Johann Wadephul reminded that Germany, along with France and Great Britain, are also ready to participate in negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
