Politicians and celebrities, including Angela Merkel, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, and George W. Bush, attended the ceremony. But the highlight of the evening was Michelle Obama's speech, after which her husband struggled to hold back tears, Bild writes.
“You told me many years ago that you couldn't promise me the whole world, but you could promise an interesting life. And, of course, you outdid yourself and were able to give me both. It was an honor for me to be by your side. You made me better and showed all of us an example to strive for,” Michelle Obama said.
In response, the 44th US President began to wipe away tears.
The Obama Presidential Center was built over five years. The 19-hectare campus in the historic Jackson Park houses a museum about Obama's presidency, a replica of the Oval Office, a library, a garden honoring Illinois' women leaders, a lake with a walking path, and a basketball court.
The project, which, according to US media reports, cost about $850 million, was mainly financed through the private Obama Foundation.
