Belarus Wants to Build a Horizontal Version of High-Rise "Candle" Buildings

M111-90 houses, or so-called "candles," have recently appeared in Minsk in significant numbers. But now the enterprise "MAPID" intends to introduce innovations into this process, its director Leanid Astreika reported in an interview with the publication "On Minsk Construction Sites".

This refers to multi-story M111-90 series houses, which have long appeared in Belarusian cities and become familiar to residents. However, the developer plans to gradually abandon traditional "panel houses" due to changes in the housing market.

"The market situation is such that we can only build 19-story houses in Minsk, and the sites are limited. In satellite towns, projects up to 7-8 stories are being implemented. Therefore, we have long been looking for an alternative to high-rise buildings, and are exploring the option of horizontal placement for the M111-90 series," Astreika said.

It is not yet known exactly what the new horizontal "candles" will look like, or if they plan to extend this practice to regional centers. However, Astreika reported that MAPID has already abandoned the so-called technical floor in the M111-90 series.

The exact terms for project implementation are also not disclosed, but the developer hopes to begin construction of an experimental house by the end of 2026.
