Belarusian deputies from the cooperation group with Venezuela will meet with their South American colleagues to discuss inter-parliamentary cooperation.
This visit takes place against the backdrop of changes in Venezuela, which began in early 2026. On January 3, 2026, by order of US President Donald Trump, American forces launched strikes on Venezuelan targets. During this operation, former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and taken to the United States.
Alexander Lukashenka sharply reacted to these events, calling Maduro's capture the result of "conspiracy and betrayal". He characterized the US actions as "vile" and called it Trump's concession to his military over Afghanistan.
Belarusian Ambassador to Venezuela Dmitry Derevinsky, during a meeting with the country's Foreign Minister, expressed support for the Venezuelan people in defending their sovereignty and condemned the US "aggression". Also in January and February, he held talks with the Minister of Foreign Trade, the Vice President for Science and Health, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the European direction.
At the same time, Donald Trump was satisfied only with the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife, and generally did not change the Venezuelan regime. The head of parliament under Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez, became the new leader of the country, who made a deal with Washington and began to fulfill all its main wishes. Alexander Lukashenka and Donald Trump, despite regular criticism, also developed business relations.
