GUBOPiK conducted searches at the parents' homes of two people connected to the editorial board of "Flagshtok" publication
As the publication writes, one of the GUBOPiK officers openly stated that such actions will continue as long as new publications appear on the resource.
Yesterday, May 19, searches took place in Belarus at the parents' homes of two people connected to the independent Gomel publication "Flagshtok".
"The editorial board views these actions by law enforcement in the context of recent years' events — since 2022, the Gomel region has been drawn into military activity due to Russia's war against Ukraine. It is not excluded that, against the backdrop of a possible escalation of the situation, there is an attempt to preemptively clear the information space of independent and uncontrolled media," the publication's statement reads.
The editorial board adds that "Flagshtok" is not one or two people. Over six years of work, a large team has formed around the media outlet. Some have left the project, new people have joined, and the team continues to regularly update and develop.
Some of the founders have long since moved on and successfully realize themselves independently of "Flagshtok".
"Therefore, pressure on specific individuals can only be seen as yet another attempt to intimidate and pressure independent media in Belarus," the publication writes.
The Gomel media outlet "Flagshtok" emerged in 2020 thanks to a public initiative that opposed the construction of a 60-meter flagpole in Gomel for half a million dollars. And although the structure did appear, the residents of the Gomel region gained an independent publication that covers high-profile events in the region and conducts journalistic investigations.
As a result, the urbanists' protest project turned into a successful publication with exclusives and insights about Gomel and the region.
