"Why do we need villages with three people?" Piotra Piatrouski suggests moving pensioners from small villages to agro-towns

Propagandist and communist party activist Piotra Piatrouski reflected on the "revival of the village" on Belarusian Radio and presented his original views on what to do with deserted villages and the remnants of their indigenous inhabitants.

"My opinion is — maybe we shouldn't keep villages with three people? We have agro-towns. These should be such accumulative centers. The population should be moved there. And these villages can be restored...," — Piatrouski outlines his ideas.

At this point he was interrupted and asked to explain what he meant by the word "moving/relocating".

"Well, look, they are dying out. Who's there? Pensioners. Can we really leave pensioners in remote villages? Is it efficient? In my opinion, not very efficient," — explains the propagandist.

To the remark that an elderly person still lives in their own home, where their roots are, and would clearly wish to live out their life in their homeland, Piatrouski dismisses it:

"Roots or no roots... Why shouldn't they move to an agro-town where there's a paramedic station?"

Moreover, he agrees that not everyone will like this idea, but:

"What else is there for us to do? Leave the elderly in remote farmsteads where emergency medical services cannot pass in winter or during some spring-autumn flood season?.. We really need to rationalize things here."

As for the deserted villages, cleared of their indigenous population, he suggests restoring them and turning them into giant agritourism estates, "recreational centers in ethnographic style."
