No Criminal Proceeding over Mutilation of Cormorants to Be Launched

Animal rights still remain beyond Belarusian legislation.

Belarusian police will not institute criminal proceedings in connection with June's cruel attack on cormorant chicks that left more than two dozen young birds with their beaks cut off in a bird colony in the Viciebsk region.

The 26 mutilated birds were left unable to hunt, find food and eat and were finally culled or died themselves.

The suspected attacker has already been identified and charged with a civil offense. If found guilty, he may face a fine of up to three million rubels ($360) or a jail sentence of up to 15 days.

Ornithologists earlier estimated that 150 to 200 cormorant pairs nested in the colony near a lake in the Chashniki district. They believe that the birds were mutilated by a local resident in exchange for payments from a fish farm.

Birds such as herons and cormorants feed on fish, which causes harm to fish farming.
