The State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) notes that every winter there are interruptions in the illegal movement of migrants from Belarus to the EU — for various reasons. However, according to the service, changes in the behavior of the Minsk regime can now also be suspected, reports LRT.

Over the past ten days, Lithuania has not recorded a single attempt of illegal border crossing from Belarus.

«At the moment, it can be assumed that the activity of organizing migrants, directing them, assisting them, and similar actions are now, to some extent, suspended,» Giedrius Mišutis, a representative of the State Border Guard Service, told BNS agency.

Migrants were last recorded at the Latvian border with Belarus on December 30, and at the Polish border on January 9.

According to G. Mišutis, this in itself is not a new trend. «Throughout January 2024, there were 15 days when zero was also recorded in all three countries. There was also a period when for eight days in a row there were no cases in all three countries (…), even in February there were three days with zero indicators,» he noted.

«In January 2025, there were five such days – also zero in all three countries. This is a shorter period, but still nothing fundamentally new,» added the VSAT representative.

According to border guards, clearer trends in illegal migration from Belarus will become apparent with the warming weather.

Some political observers suggest that the issue of illegal migration from Belarus to the EU might have been discussed during the December meeting in Minsk between Donald Trump's special envoy, John Coale, and Alexander Lukashenka.

After the meeting, the American official stated that Lukashenka promised to stop flights of smuggled balloons to Lithuania, but the topic of illegal migration was not mentioned then.
