Japan immediately increases the cost of its visas fivefold

From July 1, 2026, Japan will raise visa fees for foreign citizens. This is the first such increase since 1978, and it is very significant, reports Japan Times.

According to the new rules:

  • the cost of a single-entry visa will increase from 3,000 to 15,000 yen (from approximately 18.6 to 93 dollars);
  • the cost of a multiple-entry visa — from 6,000 to 30,000 yen (from approximately 37.2 to 186 dollars).

Japan's Foreign Minister stated that the current tariffs did not correspond to modern economic conditions. When determining the new rates, the authorities took into account inflation and changes in exchange rates over the last almost 50 years.

Additional funds received from the increase in visa prices are planned to be used to process the growing number of visa applications, develop Japanese language study programs, and strengthen control over the illegal stay of foreigners in the country.

The country's government also notes that after the increase, the cost of Japanese visas will become closer to the level of many Western states.

According to official data, about 3.56 million foreign tourists visited Japan in May. In the first five months of 2026, almost 17.94 million people visited the country.
