Earlier, he said she begged him for a joint photo, and now he wrote on his social network Truth Social:
«She is showing poor results in Italy with her popularity level, perhaps because she refused the United States of America — a country that truly loves and defends Italy — when it came to preventing Iran from acquiring or developing nuclear weapons (but NATO, in principle, did the same!).
She didn't even allow us to use Italian runways, which created great logistical inconvenience, and this is despite the fact that the US allocates hundreds of billions of dollars a year to defend Italy and other "so-called" NATO allies».
Meloni stated in response:
«President Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless. As for my popularity, being your friend certainly hasn't helped it, and it doesn't depend on my relationship with you».
She added that her popularity depends on her ability to defend Italy's national interests.
«And that is exactly what I have always done. It's also what I did regarding American military bases in Italy. Their use is regulated by agreements that we have always respected and which cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister».
«In any case, my popularity is none of your business. I advise you to focus on your own,» — Meloni replied.
