Woman Hospitalized in Intensive Care in Grodno Region After Tick Bite
In the Grodno region, a tick bite led to severe consequences — an elderly woman was admitted to intensive care with nervous system damage. She was hospitalized in March, reports the "Grodno" TV and radio company.
As it turned out, the woman didn't attach importance to the bite, as she had encountered ticks before: her husband is a hunter. However, after some time, her condition sharply deteriorated, and intensive care was required. Fortunately, the treatment concluded successfully, and the patient was discharged home.
Doctors explain that the tick-borne encephalitis virus can affect the brain and cause meningoencephalitis. The disease often progresses in two waves: first, cold-like symptoms appear, followed by a brief improvement, and then a sharp deterioration with severe neurological manifestations.
In the region, the situation with tick-borne infections remains tense. Annually, up to two hundred cases of encephalitis and Lyme disease are recorded in the Grodno region. Approximately a quarter or even a third of encephalitis patients are admitted to intensive care, and some of them suffer serious consequences requiring long rehabilitation.
Lyme disease is no less dangerous. Up to a third of ticks in the region may be infected with the bacteria that cause it. This infection can affect the skin, nervous system, heart, and joints. Annually, more than a hundred such patients are treated in hospitals, while thousands more receive outpatient treatment.
Doctors urge caution, as the tick activity season is just beginning, and even a single bite can lead to very serious consequences.
