Latvia extended the ban on import of products and feed from Belarus

Latvia has decided to extend the ban on the import of agricultural and feed products from Belarus and Russia for another year — it will now be in effect until July 1, 2027, writes Lsm.lv.

These restrictions were introduced in March 2024. They apply only to goods imported for use in Latvia itself and do not cover transit — when products pass through the country to other EU states.

The ban covers various types of agricultural products, including cereals (wheat, rye, barley, oats), legumes (peas), millet, oilseeds, sugar beet, as well as processed products — flour, feed mixes, and products of animal origin.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture, after the introduction of the restrictions, imports from Russia significantly decreased: initially by approximately 30%, and then even further — up to 85%. Supplies from Belarus also decreased — initially by 12%, and then by approximately 55%.

Thus, Latvia continues its policy of restricting agricultural product supplies from these countries, and it is not ruled out that measures may become even stricter in the future.
