In Chad, two large families fought over a water well, 42 people died
In the east of the African country Chad, at least 42 people died and 10 more were injured as a result of inter-family clashes. According to authorities , the conflict did not start as a usual confrontation between communities, but due to a dispute between two families over access to a water source. Later, this escalated into a widespread wave of revenge and violence.
Authorities claim that the swift intervention of security forces allowed them to stop the further spread of clashes, and the situation is now under control.
The injured were taken to medical centers in Wadi-Fira province. Two approaches to resolving the situation have also been announced: traditional reconciliation for the civilian side of the conflict and judicial procedures to determine criminal responsibility.
The government of Chad also expressed concern about the possible impact of the war in neighboring Sudan on the situation. According to officials, all measures will be taken to prevent destabilization of the border region.
The eastern provinces of Chad have been receiving many refugees from civil-war-torn Sudan in recent months, which increases tension around resources and security.
