Speaking on January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among other things, stated that "every Viktor who lives on European money, trying to sell European interests, deserves to be smacked in the neck." He did not specify whom he meant, but in Ukraine and Europe, this was perceived as a hint at Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán himself also took it personally.

In his comment on this statement, published on the social network X, Viktor Orbán emphasized that he does not intend to seek "mutual understanding" with Zelensky. He noted that he is "a free man who serves the Hungarian people," and not foreign interests.
In addition, the Hungarian Prime Minister called Zelensky "a man in a desperate situation," who for the fourth year cannot or does not want to stop the military conflict in Ukraine, despite all the assistance from the United States.
Nevertheless, despite the personal insult, Orbán promised that Hungary would still continue to supply Ukraine with electricity and fuel, and also support Ukrainian refugees coming to Hungary. He said, "life will judge everything else, and everyone will get what they deserve."
This is not the first sharp public criticism directed at Viktor Orbán by Volodymyr Zelensky. Earlier, the Ukrainian president also spoke critically about the Hungarian leader, especially commenting on his doubts about the expediency of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
Orbán himself has repeatedly criticized Ukraine for the persistence of corruption problems and disputed claims of successful reforms. He emphasized that Hungarian money should work for the development of Hungary, and not for the luxurious life of the Ukrainian elite.
Regarding sanctions against Russia, Hungary often takes a position that temporarily blocks new restrictions, although ultimately supports them after additional negotiations with the EU. In addition, Orbán has repeatedly spoken out against sending frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.
