US President Donald Trump plans to meet today with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss a possible US withdrawal from the alliance. White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt announced this at a briefing, writes CNN.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the Oval Office, and Trump expects an open and frank discussion. According to his press secretary, the issue of the US withdrawing from NATO will indeed be raised during the talks.
Previously, Trump had already criticized the alliance's allies. He believes that they did not support the US in the conflict with Iran and generally do not meet expectations, although America spends large sums on their defense. In the American president's opinion, NATO operates unequally: the US defends others, but does not receive help in return.
Trump also stated that he is seriously considering the possibility of the country withdrawing from the alliance. He noted that disappointment with NATO intensified after European countries did not support his position on various issues, including regarding Greenland, which he wants to take from another NATO member—Denmark.
Rutte's visit to Washington will last several days and takes place against a backdrop of tense relations between the US and NATO.
