Czech President: Trump in a few weeks did more to undermine trust in NATO than Putin in many years

“It is worth noting that Donald Trump in the last few weeks has done more to undermine confidence in the alliance than Vladimir Putin in many years. This is, of course, bad news,” Pavel said.

The main reason for the Czech president's criticism is the US's behavior in the context of the conflict with Iran. Pavel noted that the American side practically did not coordinate its actions with European partners and did not explain the goals of the operations to them. As a result, NATO countries found themselves in a situation where they were expected to provide support, but they did not have a full understanding of what was happening or why they should participate.

At the same time, Petr Pavel emphasized an important principle: NATO is a defensive alliance, created for the collective defense of its members, not for participation in any military campaigns outside its territory. Therefore, in his opinion, Trump's reproaches against European countries seem unfair.

He also drew attention to the fact that Trump only began to express dissatisfaction after the situation in the conflict started to develop not according to his scenario. Prior to this, according to Pavel, there was no serious request for joint action from the US.

Against this backdrop, the American administration is discussing concrete steps in response to the allies' position. These include the possible withdrawal of American troops from certain European countries, as well as the relocation of military bases to states considered more loyal to Washington's policies. Such actions could affect, for example, Germany or Spain, where American military personnel are currently stationed.

At the same time, other European countries, presumably, could conversely benefit from such a redeployment — this refers to states in Eastern and Southern Europe, where the US could strengthen its presence.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Trump himself publicly questions NATO's reliability. He has already stated that the alliance did not help the US at the right moment and might not help in the future. Such words cause concern in Europe, as they question the main principle of the alliance — mutual defense.

Overall, Petr Pavel believes that such rhetoric and actions weaken NATO's unity, create mistrust among partners, and could have long-term consequences for security in Europe and the world.
