Released Russian archaeologist Butyagin is going to Crimea again

Alexander Butyagin, who was released as a result of a recent exchange between Poland and Belarus, has returned to St. Petersburg, reported by TV Rain.

In an interview with Vesti, he stated his desire to go digging again in annexed Crimea: "I think so [I'll return]. The question now is rather whether I will have time to organize the expedition before summer, because reports still need to be sent there. I think the work should be continued.

Then he confirmed his return to Crimea, and also stated that he would not go to Europe in the near future: "I think it would be unwise in the near future. Sooner or later, when this story ends, maybe. But now I need to think hard and consult. Now I will be very careful about this, as I've had enough experiences."

Butyagin was detained in Poland in November 2025 at Ukraine's request. He was accused of plundering Ukrainian national cultural heritage due to excavations in Crimea.

In March 2026, a Polish court approved his extradition to Ukraine, however, this week Butyagin was released as a result of an exchange.
