Bernadette Chirac held a special place in French politics. She became the only First Lady in French history who herself held elected public offices. In 1971, she was elected to the municipal council of the commune of Sarran, and from 1979 to 2015, she served as a general councillor for the Corrèze department.
Jacques Chirac led France for two consecutive presidential terms — from 1995 to 2007. He died in September 2019 at the age of 86.
Bernadette and Jacques Chirac were one of France's most prominent political couples and remained together for many decades.
