Mikalaj Statkievich May Receive One Extra Year in Prison

Political prisoner’s wife Maryna Adamovich is seriously worried over her husband’s life.

Mikalaj Statkievich, ex-presidential candidate who is presently serving his imprisonment, was placed in solitary confinement cell for 10 days. His wife Maryna Adamovich is seriously worried over her husband’s life, Salidarnasc says.

She links Mikalaj’s being held in solitary confinement to recent provocations against Mikalaj Statkievic: earlier, Mikalaj was placed with an HIV-infected person who cut his veins twice.

“The public prosecutor office did not responded to my appeal about provocation. I think his solitary confinement is the continuation of the provocation.

“They provoke him and then put in a cell. I see now the rumors coming true: they try to prepare him for his prison term extension based on the article No.411 [of the Criminal Code — NN].”

According to this article on persistent resistance to the prison administration, one may be given one extra year of imprisonment, said Maryna Adamovich.

“When Mikalaj was transferred to the prison in Mahiliou [from a penal colony], the chief of administration said he was suicidally inclined.

“Everyone told about Autukhovich [another Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Autukhovich who was reported to cut his veins in prison — NN] then, so I thought he just mixed facts up.”

However, Maryna Adamovich receives information on tendency for suicide again.

She is seriously concerned over her husband’s life.

“I think they might have such already prepared scenario to be able to justify themselves. I have no idea what do and where to appeal.”
