Brazilian Alpine Skier Won the Olympics

This is generally South America's first gold at the Winter Olympic Games.

World Cup stage winner, Brazilian alpine skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, today won a gold medal in giant slalom. In his second run, he showed a time of two minutes and 25 seconds. Braathen was also the best in his first run.

Second place went to Swiss Marco Odermatt, and bronze to Swiss Loïc Meillard.

However, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen was born in Norway; his father is Norwegian, and his mother is Brazilian.

Lucas competed for Norway for a long time, but then changed national teams. By October 2023, Lucas was already among the alpine skiing elite: he had won five stages and held the Small Crystal Globe in slalom.

But Lucas is still Brazilian: he plays football, is friends with Ronaldo (the Phenomenon), and dances samba on snow.

Braathen admitted that he always felt the influence of two cultures. He loves Brazilian music (his mother instilled it in him), speaks Portuguese (but is still improving his grammar), and as a child wanted to pursue — what? — naturally, football.

But he has been skiing since he was nine years old. His father, Bjørn, instilled this love in him.

After the run, athletes are allowed to call their relatives via video link, and Lucas called his mother.

By the way, he was supported today in the stands with two flags: large Brazilian and small Norwegian ones.
