Russia-linked hackers attempt to access Signal and WhatsApp accounts
Dutch intelligence services have stated that Russia-linked hackers are attempting to gain access to Signal and WhatsApp messenger accounts worldwide. This was announced in a joint statement by the General Intelligence and Security Service of the Netherlands (AIVD) and the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), writes Reuters.

According to the agencies, the attacks target accounts of high-ranking officials, military personnel, and journalists. The statement refers to a "global cyber campaign," during which hackers have likely already managed to gain access to confidential information.
One of the methods used is to impersonate the Signal Support chatbot to gain access to a user's account. After that, attackers can read not only personal messages but also correspondence in group chats.
However, Signal does not have a support chatbot — communication with users is conducted only via email.
In addition, hackers are attempting to gain illegal access to Signal and WhatsApp accounts through the "linked devices" feature. In such cases, users may not even know that their correspondence is being read remotely.
The director of Dutch military intelligence, Vice Admiral Pieter Rijsbeek, noted that messengers like Signal and WhatsApp, even with end-to-end encryption, should not be used for transmitting secret or particularly important information.
AIVD head Simone Smith emphasized that this is not about hacking the Signal or WhatsApp services themselves. According to her, the threat concerns individual user accounts.
