In Britain, a Fox Boarded a Ship and Sailed to America

It is still unknown how and why the fox got on board while the vessel was docked in an English port.

A red fox that secretly boarded a cargo ship off the coast of Southampton in Britain has successfully traveled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean and is now under the care of staff at the Bronx Zoo in New York, writes the BBC.

American inspectors discovered the fox in the cargo hold at the Port of New York and New Jersey, after which it was transferred to the Bronx Zoo on February 19.

"Once the veterinary team determines that the fox is healthy, the zoo, in collaboration with wildlife experts, will find a suitable long-term home for the animal," the zoo's statement said.

Veterinarians clarified that the animal is a two-year-old male weighing about 5 kg.

It is still unknown how and why the fox got on board while the vessel was docked in an English port.

"At the Port of Southampton, we handle everything from cars and containers to cruise liners, but even we were surprised that a fox essentially arranged its own transatlantic journey," said a spokesperson for Associated British Ports (ABP) in Southampton.

"Clearly, he wanted to swap the Solent [the strait separating England's Isle of Wight from the mainland] for the Staten Island Ferry. Though next time, we'd advise him to choose the Queen Mary 2, which sails the Southampton — New York route with much greater comfort!" he added.

"He seems to have settled in completely already," Keith Lovett, one of the zoo's managers, told the AP agency. "He's been through a lot."

Foxes are among the most common carnivorous mammals in the world. Known for their reddish fur and fluffy tails with white tips, they inhabit Europe, Asia, North America, and parts of Africa.

The amazing ability of foxes to quickly adapt to changing living conditions and their unpickiness about food allows them to successfully live in a wide variety of places — from forests and meadows to urban areas.

Foxes can often be seen on the streets of London and other British cities.
