NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Donald Trump at the White House. This was their first meeting after Trump criticized allies in Europe for refusing to join the war that the US and Israel are waging against Iran, reports the BBC.
Following this, the US President stated that America could withdraw from the organization, in which the United States plays a key role and which Trump previously called a "paper tiger." This statement by Trump, according to the White House press secretary, could have been one of the topics of conversation between Trump and Rutte.
The meeting took place behind closed doors. In an interview with CNN, Rutte called the conversation "very open and frank," but did not directly answer whether Trump spoke about leaving NATO. According to Rutte, Trump is "upset" by the behavior of the allies.
The US President commented on the meeting on Truth Social, complaining that "NATO did not help us when we needed it," and added: "Remember Greenland — this large, poorly managed piece of ice!"
Trump's intention to "acquire" Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark, provoked a crisis in NATO.
Later, the US President stated that he does not plan to seize the island by force, but promised that he "will not forget" the negative reaction to his idea from NATO allies.
This week, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, on Trump's desire to "punish" European countries that refused to participate in the US and Israel's war against Iran.
