Mexico's President Invited the Famous Duck Merlin to Her Palace, and It Pecked Her Hand
Merlin became an internet sensation on the opening day of the World Cup when it was spotted on the streets of central Mexico City during celebrations of Mexico's victory over South Africa.
The famous duck Merlin, which became Mexico's unofficial mascot for the 2026 World Cup, visited the National Palace at the invitation of the country's president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
At the traditional morning press conference, Merlin appeared in a Mexico national team jersey and a FIFA scarf. Sheinbaum noted that the duck's story has become a symbol not only of the World Cup but also of the hard work of its owners, writes sports.ru.
«We want to get to know this family, learn about their lives, and help them. Merlin is already very famous, but it is her family that takes care of her and makes Mexico a great country,» the president stated.
During the meeting, a funny incident occurred: when Sheinbaum tried to pet the bird, Merlin lightly pecked her hand.

«I want the whole world to see the beautiful side of Mexico. I think our story became popular because people saw an ordinary, hardworking family that works every day for their future,» said the duck's owner, Carla Yvette Gomez.
