Statkevich: A commander's flight from the battlefield at its critical moment has always demoralized his army
The ex-political prisoner reflected in his Telegram channel on Lukashenka's foreign trips against the backdrop of earlier threats from Zelenskyy.

"People have been fighting each other since ancient times. And at all times, the outcome of battles largely depended on the abilities and firmness of commanders. A commander's flight from the battlefield, especially at its critical moment, has always demoralized his army and led to defeat. Times have changed, but even now, leaders of political forces fleeing the country at a dangerous moment lead to severe consequences for their ideas and supporters.
Such a thing has happened twice with Belarusian democratic forces. The first time was in the mid-90s, when at the very beginning of the street struggle campaign for independence against the ruling regime's attempt to unite into a single state with the Russian Federation, the then undisputed leader of the national forces fled the country (this refers to Zianon Pazniak's departure in April 1996 - NN).
The second time was in 2020, when during mass protests Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya went into exile at the authorities' suggestion, for whose proclaimed victory in the "elections" many thousands of demonstrators then took to the streets.
"But now it has happened that a similar story occurred on the opposite side — during the escalation of relations with warring Ukraine, facing the threat of a possible strike by Ukrainian drones on Russian transponders on Belarus's southern border, the country's main political and military leader left the country in an unknown direction for a long time. It's interesting how his subordinates view this 'training'," wrote Mikalai Statkevich.
Lukashenka, as it turned out, flew to Valdai to meet Putin on Friday, and is now in Beijing.
