Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced the government's resignation amid ongoing mass protests.
Zhelyazkov made the announcement in a televised address — just minutes before parliament was due to vote on a no-confidence motion against the government, writes Meduza.
Mass protests in Bulgaria began over a draft budget that included a 3% GDP deficit while simultaneously raising taxes and social contributions.
Soon, in addition to dissatisfaction with the budget draft (which was eventually withdrawn from parliamentary consideration), demonstrators began to criticize the government's work in general. Calls for Zhelyazkov's resignation were heard, but at the time he refused to step down as head of government, indicating that such reshuffles were undesirable before Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone. The country is scheduled to transition to the single European currency on January 1, 2026.
The no-confidence vote, before which Zhelyazkov announced his resignation, was to be his sixth since the beginning of 2025, when he took office as head of government.
