Moldova initiated the process of withdrawing from the CIS

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova has begun the legal procedures necessary for the country's complete cessation of participation in the CIS. This was announced by Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi on the national radio station Radio Moldova.

According to the minister, for its final withdrawal, the country needs to denounce three main documents on which the Commonwealth is based: the agreement on its establishment in 1991, its protocol, and the CIS Charter, adopted in 1993. After this, Moldova will officially cease to be a member of the organization. Popșoi noted that this decision was recently made and the process is already underway.

Draft documents on denunciation are planned to be submitted for parliamentary consideration after the start of the new session. It is expected that the entire procedure could be completed by mid-February 2026.

This step is a continuation of Moldova's course towards gradually moving away from CIS structures. Back in November 2025, the government approved withdrawal from several sectoral agreements, and parliament began considering the denunciation of key agreements concerning visa-free regime and tax principles in trade.

Since 2022, the country has effectively not participated in meetings of CIS bodies. In 2023, Moldova also began the procedure for withdrawing from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and renounced some other agreements.

The authorities' decision aligns with Chisinau's course towards European integration: Moldova has candidate status for accession to the European Union.
