Sex, death and betrayal. North Korea made a propaganda film in the Hollywood style
North Korea has for the first time shown a propaganda film for youth that differs from the country's traditional cinema. The film contains romantic scenes, uses "Hollywood" narrative techniques and dynamic action scenes — rooftop fights, car chases, explosions. This style is intended to be more appealing to the younger generation, CNN writes .

The film, titled "Days and Nights of Confrontation," continues the plot of the previous 2022 film "One Day and One Night," which dealt with an assassination attempt on North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung. The new film is set in the 1990s after Kim Il Sung's death. The main character is prosecutor Kim Song Jae, who, along with his team, investigates a murder case.
During the plot, an unexpected twist occurs: Kim Song Jae turns out to be Ri Tae Il — the son of the man who previously tried to assassinate Kim Il Sung in the first film. He continues his father's work and plans the assassination of the second North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, even betraying his wife. However, the plot fails, and Ri Tae Il is forced to flee abroad.
The film also contains elements of bloody brutality: the main antagonist kills people, suffocates them with a bag, drowns them in a river, and also uses certain "forbidden" South Korean words and wears crosses and a Bible, which emphasizes his foreignness.
However, while the film's style is updated and more dynamic, the main message remains traditionally propagandistic: disloyalty to the regime is shown as a hereditary "illness," and the fight against enemies never ends.
The film concludes with scenes from the present day: one of Ri's descendants returns to Pyongyang and participates in the opening ceremony of Jongwi Street in May 2024. Jongwi Street is a new facility in the capital that North Korea uses as a symbol of active youth participation in the country's life and development.
