Anatol Markevich served as Minister of Culture from November 2020 to December 2024. A graduate of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Brest Pedagogical University, he worked as a teacher before his career as an official. He later headed the Navahrudak District Executive Committee and was Lukashenka's assistant for the Brest region.
As Minister of Culture, Markevich stated that "traitors have no place on stage," and that Belarusian culture after 2020 had cleansed itself of "destructive elements." Under him, the rules for issuing touring certificates were tightened, and blacklists of artists were reinstated. Under him, the Kupalaŭski Theatre was definitively dismantled, and not a single memorable film was made.
At the end of 2024, Markevich was replaced as Minister of Culture by actor Ruslan Charnecki.
But Markevich also found himself an undemanding job. He became the head of the Permanent Committee of the Union State's representative office in Minsk. Belarusian officials vie for such "union" positions because their salaries are based on high Russian rates. This allows them to earn substantial money in a couple of years with an absolute absence of real work.
Markevich has been working in the Union State apparatus since at least April 2025.
