A monument to Hetman Mazepa will be erected in Kyiv on the site of the former Lenin monument
In Kyiv, a monument to Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa is planned to be erected on the site of the former Lenin monument. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on June 28, speaking with a speech for Constitution Day on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, where a bust of Mazepa had also been previously installed.

According to the President of Ukraine, the scale of this historical figure deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital:
"I believe that the ideal place for it exists... And I am sure that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand strong," Zelenskyy stated.
He noted that even in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Mazepa's bust "will stand by right," as he was its patron and financed the monastery's development.
"For centuries, Russia tarnished his name, wishing for Ukrainians to view their history through foreign eyes, convincing our people that Mazepa was a traitor. That lie lost. Forever. And today we honor our outstanding statesman and military figure, patron, and leader of the Cossack state, Ivan Mazepa. And it is important that we do this right here, in the Lavra, which truly flourished under his patronage—with temples, bell towers, and its unique Ukrainian Baroque appearance," the President of Ukraine emphasized.
Ivan Mazepa was the Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host from 1687-1709. In the Russian Empire, the USSR, and modern Russia, he was traditionally considered a traitor after he allied with Swedish King Charles XII against Peter I in 1708.
After the defeat in the Battle of Poltava in 1709, Mazepa's name was anathematized in the Russian Orthodox Church and for many centuries became a symbol of betrayal in Russian historical tradition.
At the same time, in modern Ukraine, Mazepa is most often regarded as an outstanding statesman, a patron of culture and the church, and a symbol of the struggle for the autonomy of Ukrainian lands.
His monument is to appear in the center of Kyiv — in the area of Shevchenko Boulevard, not far from where the Lenin monument stood until 2013, which was dismantled during Euromaidan.
