"Give us a little push, give us a little kiss. We don't want much. But they said, 'No, we can't do that'," Trump noted.
He also recalled that the US spends "hundreds of millions of dollars" on stationing troops in Germany and Europe.
At the same meeting, Trump unexpectedly praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Answering a question about whether Ukraine would win the war against Russia, he said: "He's doing pretty well. You have to say, he's brave. He has great equipment. He has great people, fighters."
Rutte tried to defend Germany, stating that Berlin had fulfilled its bilateral obligations to the US and also increased defense spending.
But Trump continued to criticize allies and stated that France, Italy, and Great Britain had also "left the US in the lurch."
