Defqon.1, one of the largest electronic music festivals, has been cancelled in the town of Biddinghuizen. The reason was extreme heat: meteorological services announced a red weather warning, and temperatures in some areas of the country could rise to almost 40 degrees Celsius. The decision to cancel was made in conjunction with the authorities, Bild reports.
Initially, the organizers tried to simply reduce the number of guests and deny entry to visitors with day tickets for today and tomorrow. However, in the end, the festival had to be cancelled entirely.
For those who had already arrived, this came as an unpleasant surprise: according to eyewitnesses, the music simply cut out, and many learned about the full cancellation from social media.
According to NL Times, 58,000 people were expected at the festival's campsite this year, with an additional 15,000 expected daily with day tickets.
Now, visitors must leave the site, and organizers advise those who have not yet arrived not to come, as they will not be admitted anyway. The cost of tickets is promised to be refunded, but details are still being clarified.
