At least 27 people died in a fire that engulfed a popular bar in Bangkok on Monday night, writes the BBC.

According to local media, among the dead are nine men and 18 women. More than 60 injured people were taken to the hospital, eight of whom are in critical condition.

It is also reported that some people are considered missing.

As the Prime Minister of the kingdom, Anutin Charnvirakul, told reporters, the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Footage from the scene shows people running out of the burning building; some of them screaming, some people falling.

It is reported that firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within half an hour.

The head of government said he spoke with a musician who was on stage when the fire started.

“He said the fire started in the area of the electrical panel, and after that, everything happened very quickly. Flames erupted, and everyone tried to run out,” Charnvirakul said. “Many couldn't do it because they were in the back of the room. They tried to hide from the fire and smoke in the restroom, and that’s where we found most of the bodies.”

The bar is located in the Chatuchak district in the north of the Thai capital.

Judging by footage from the scene, body bags for the deceased were visible near the bar after the fire was extinguished.

Inside the building, completely burnt-out walls and furniture remained, and part of the ceiling had collapsed.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the scene and stated that the rapid spread of the fire was facilitated by flammable interior elements of the bar.
