Preparation for the deployment of a German brigade in Lithuania is on schedule
The Bundeswehr continues to transfer troops to Lithuania to defend NATO's eastern flank. A total of almost five thousand German soldiers are planned to be permanently stationed there by the end of 2027, writes BILD.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas says that preparations are even ahead of schedule. New residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, and medical facilities are appearing in place of dense forest.
“Everything is going according to plan for the formation of the German brigade. As for the first phase of construction, we are even ten months ahead of schedule. This means we have made significant progress in creating the infrastructure and can start the second phase sooner. […] We can assume that Germany and Lithuania will be ready by the end of 2027 in any case, if not sooner. The brigade will be fully equipped and ready,” Kaunas told the WELT newspaper.
For deterrence on NATO's eastern flank, this brigade under the command of General Christian Huber is "extremely important," Kaunas stated. He calls its deployment "a milestone for German-Lithuanian relations."
About 1,800 German soldiers are already stationed in Lithuania. This month, they are conducting exercises in Pabradė, just 20 kilometers from the Belarusian border. The 45th Tank Brigade, in these exercises dubbed Freedom Shield, is interacting with the 203rd Tank Battalion from Augustdorf and elements of the 122nd Motorized Infantry Battalion from Oberviechtach. Both battalions are expected to relocate to Lithuania next year.
