He was 88 years old. Charhinets was the only living writer to hold the status of People's Writer of Belarus.

Mikalai Charhinets was born on October 17, 1937, in Minsk. In his youth, he played football and represented several Soviet clubs.
In 1963, he graduated from the Belarusian State Institute of Physical Culture, and in 1967, from the Faculty of Law of the Belarusian State University. From 1964, he served in the internal affairs bodies, progressing from a criminal investigation officer to the head of the criminal investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the BSSR. From 1984 to 1987, he was an advisor in Afghanistan. He held a Ph.D. in legal sciences and the rank of Lieutenant General of the internal service.
As a writer, he became one of the most famous authors of the so-called "police detective" genre. He wrote exclusively in Russian. He authored about fifty books, including "Vam — zadaniye" (You Have an Assignment), "Za sekundu do vystrela" (A Second Before the Shot), "Taina Chernykh Gor" (Secret of the Black Mountains), "Synovya" (Sons), "Killer" (Killer), "Pobeg" (Escape), "Smert za smert" (Death for Death), and others. Feature films and television films were made based on his works.
Charhinets was one of the symbolic figures among pro-government writers, serving as chairman of the pro-government Writers' Union of Belarus from 2005 to 2022.
He also actively participated in the activities of pro-government political structures, heading the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic on International Affairs and National Security from 1997 to 2008.
For all this, Mikalai Charhinets was awarded numerous state orders and medals of the USSR, Belarus, and other countries. And in 2022, he was awarded the honorary title "People's Writer of Belarus" — for the first time in history, this title was given to a writer who did not write in Belarusian.
