27-year-old Belarusian woman without children is undergoing sterilization — and here's why she can
Sasha Vasilok lives with schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, manages the manifestations of her illnesses, and blogs about it. Recently, the girl told her subscribers that she decided to undergo sterilization to never have children. According to Belarusian laws, she has every right to do so.

Sasha was born in Minsk, but in recent years she has lived in Russia. The girl is known for her mental health blogs, where she talks about life with schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, shares her problems, and teaches how to work with social networks. She does well: Sasha has 85 thousand subscribers on Instagram alone, and she is often invited to other blogs to tell her story.
Sasha was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia when she was 15 years old. And recently, the Belarusian woman admitted to her subscribers that she began thinking about sterilization, that is, tubal ligation, around the same time.
This radical method of contraception reduces the chance of pregnancy to the level of exceptions. Usually, to get permission for it in Belarus, a woman must have at least two children or be no younger than 35 years old.
But there are diseases that allow bypassing these requirements. According to the Ministry of Health Resolution No. 89, this applies to any oncological diseases, the presence of transplanted organs, and some other diagnoses. Among them is schizophrenia, and Sasha wants to take advantage of this opportunity.
Women with schizophrenia can be good mothers, but it's a difficult task for the woman herself, her doctor, and her loved ones. Pregnancy and childbirth can destabilize even a mentally healthy woman, not to mention those with complex psychiatric diagnoses. Most psychiatric medications are risky for the fetus. In addition, the predisposition to schizophrenia is genetically inherited — this is an additional 10% risk.
Sasha has currently signed up for an initial consultation — she wants to find out what she needs to get the operation. And at the same time, she told her subscribers about her plans, and not everyone understood her.
Although the girl does not hide her serious diagnoses, some subscribers believe that her decision is just a whim:
"It's sad when people refuse children because they are afraid to pass on certain genes."
"Haven't you tried condoms? You don't know how else to attract attention."
"It's a pity, your genes would contribute to the development of the human gene pool in the future."
Some subscribers, on the contrary, praise Sasha — saying that she is very responsible because she takes into account the risks of pregnancy with her illnesses. Sasha, however, assures that it's not about the risks. She simply does not want to give birth, and her diagnosis simply gives her a convenient opportunity to get sterilized before she turns 35.
Sasha recorded a reel where she answered some user comments. Here's what she says to those who think she might regret the operation later:
"What if I give birth and regret it? What if pregnancy causes me psychosis and I jump out the window with the child?"
