Venezuela Ready to Ship Oil to Belarus Again

The project of oil exports to Belarus did not fail, Venezuelan ambassador says.

Venezuela is ready to supply oil in the amount and on the terms required by Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Venezuela to Belarus Americo Dias Nunez told a press conference on the occasion of Venezuela Independence Day, BelTA says.

When speaking on the suspension of Venezuelan oil imports, the diplomat stressed: “It does not mean the project failed.” Belarus needed oil of certain quality. “Venezuela expressed its readiness to supply the necessary amount of oil,” the diplomat said.

“At a press conference last year I said that Venezuelan oil deliveries should not be seen as a kind of competition to Russian oil supplies. We never had such intentions. It was just a difficult period when Belarus needed this raw material, and Venezuela expressed readiness to help. And, as you know, we supplied Santa Barbara light oil,” the diplomat said.

Americo Dias Nunez stressed that Venezuela remains interested in Belarus’ oil refineries.

Belarus decided to buy Venezuelan oil after the conflict with Russian authorities which occurred in 2009-2010. Belarus claimed that Russia must cancel custom tax on oil, but Russia insisted on Belarus’ paying it.

The First Deputy Prime Minister Uladzimir Siamashka assured in “bargain prices” for Venezuelan oil. However, it became known that every ton of oil imported from South American country costs 1.5 times more than Russian oil.

Many consider it to be a purely political gesture aimed to influence Russia and it is not the only possible source of energy resources. Such position was also voiced by Uladzimir Siamashka: “But for the Venezuelan oil, the establishment of joint oil and oil products market probably could have not taken place.”
