The Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced that a ballistic missile, which was launched from the territory of Iran and entered Turkish airspace, was destroyed over the city of Gaziantep in the south of the country, Euronews reports .
According to the ministry's statement, the missile was neutralized by elements of NATO's air and missile defense system deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Turkish military personnel noted that the missile debris fell in a desert area in the Gaziantep region. No one was injured in the incident.
The ministry emphasized that Turkey attaches great importance to good neighborly relations and regional stability, but will decisively take all necessary measures against any threat to its territory and airspace.
This is already the second such incident in the past week. Earlier, Turkish authorities reported that the NATO air defense system also intercepted an Iranian missile over the country's territory.
Shortly before the Turkish ministry's statement, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to southeastern Turkey.
The U.S. Department of State also ordered non-essential U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the U.S. Consulate General in Adana due to security concerns.
